Dr. Katherine Brown is the principal at Colham Ferry Elementary School.

Dr. Brown began her career as a second grade teacher in Lowndes County. She and her husband moved to the Athens area for graduate school in 2006, and she taught first and second grade in Barrow County. In 2009, Dr. Brown had the opportunity to help open a public charter school in Clarke County, where she spent 7 years as the enrichment specialist. In this role, she served identified gifted students, but also facilitated the development of creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with all students through her coordination of the School-wide Enrichment Model, project-based learning, and STEM initiatives. Dr. Brown worked as the Gifted Specialist for the Clarke County School District, supporting schools K-12 with gifted and advanced programming, including the implementation of the School-wide Enrichment Model, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, and Advanced Placement. She was the assistant principal at Colham Ferry Elementary School and then principal at Oconee County Primary School, before her current position.

Dr. Brown has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Valdosta State University. She holds an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Gifted and Creative Education from the University of Georgia. She completed the Rising Stars Program through Northeast Georgia RESA and the University of North Georgia to obtain her Educational Leadership Building Level Certificate.  

Dr. Brown is passionate about providing students with high-quality, differentiated learning experiences. Her greatest desire as an educator is to support student engagement in authentic learning experiences and foster a lifelong love of learning. She has won several awards, including the Georgia Council for Teachers of Mathematics Teacher of Promise Award, the Harry Passow Classroom Teacher Award, the Friends of Eve Carson Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Mary M. Frasier Equity and Excellence Award. Her classroom was chosen as an action lab for the National Association for Gifted Children and her math instruction was filmed by the Georgia Department of Education as a model for teachers throughout the state.

Mr. Mike Stanton is honored to join CFES as assistant principal. Before he joined the Mustang family, he was a 2nd grade teacher at OCPS. This will be his 18th year as an educator. In the past, he has been a K-5 math activity teacher, K-5 technology teacher, and classroom teacher as well. 

Mr. Stanton loves teaching through creating classroom experiences that help children problem solve and become independent thinkers. He strives to bring real world experiences into the classroom along with student interests to help create meaningful learning experiences.
